Has anyone else seen it yet? I went Friday night and saw it in standard digital 3D. I was pretty blown away, it was that good. There are points in the movie that you forget the images you are seeing are CG. The storyline is pretty good as well. It can be a little predictable at times, but if the story went any other way I think it would take away from the film.

I'll be going to see it again in IMAX.

Yeah, I saw it last night and thought it was fantastic.  I'm not generally into that kind of story/setting, and I hadn't seen a preview - I actually didn't even know it was in 3D.  My buddy kept telling me that it was, but I assumed he meant rendered out using 3D visualization.
I found the first interior scene with all the pods/chambers was hell on the eyes and I wondered if I could adjust to watching it, but the rest was effortless.  The effects were completely believable and just really well done.  The 3D was done so subtly in many scenes that you didn't really even think about the depth, and then bam in some scenes - it really stood out.

I have to say, I was really, really impressed.

EDIT - I meant to mention that the part that impressed me most was: gunfire, 3D, enough said.. Amazing

Hows the 3D work? You have to wear glasses? extra charge?

You wear glasses. From what I understand about the 3D technology there are two (maybe more?) images projected on the screen each polarized at different angles. When viewed through the glasses this polarization creates the visual effect of depth of field.

That being said, much of the 3D in this film is very subtle as opposed to the very in-your-face cartoony effect seen in some previous Disney-like films (Cloudy with a  Chance of Meatballs, Monsters vs. Aliens, UP, etc.), which is basically just 2D shapes that appear to pop off the screen. The 3D in this film appears to be full of curves and geometric shapes. It's very cool, very believable, and far beyond any 3D technology seen in previous films. I've heard it said that this film will revolutionize the film industry and special effects as Star Wars did 32 years ago.

Prices...

Standard Film $12.50
Digital 3D $15.50
IMAX 3D $17.50

I saw this movie on Saturday in 3d at Silver City.  It was really enjoyable.

Im not a fan of the typical NA type movie where there is some kind of war and blah blah blah, pew pew pew, people die: And that is what i expected out of Avatar.  Well.. it wasn't that type of movie at all.  Now i wish i could visit Pandora!

The 3d was a little rough for me sometimes.  I wanted to focus on the little floaty seed things at times but couldnt because they were projected out of focus on purpose.  Aside from moments like that, where my eyes were fighting with the movie, the 3d was very tastefully done: no cheap Thrills here - all done in very good taste.

I saw it in IMAX on saturday, it was awesome. I got really in to the world they created and the characters. I was really impressed with the amount of detail they came up with.

I saw it opening night.

I hated it.

If I knew it was going to be 3 hours long I would have demanded a colostomy bag and a bed to lay on.  In all reality they called it "unobtainium". I lost hope in the movie the second I heard that. It's like calling it "preciousmetalus" or "hardtogetajewls".

just saw it tonight and I thought the movie was fan-friggen-tastic, I'm probably going to go see it tomorrow as well cause it's just that darn good.  Agreed the "unobtanium" was a little hoakey, but I figured what better name for a substance that's really hard to get.  The CG was amazing, and very believable.  The characters and the setting was very well done, but I do have to admit, some of the time the 3D was a little overpowering and I actually had to remove the glasses to reset my vision.

I thought it was great, I can't wait for it to come out on blueray.
Only downside to it, is that it is pretty dances with wolves.... Obvious Native American/white conquerors undertones. But none the less a really good movie. I loved the 3D version.

Somebody told me that it was Dances with Wolves, but in space!

I haven't seen it, but I hate it.
I'm pretty sure it's because of James Cameron, who you may remember from such failfilms like Titanic and True Lies.

I thought the same thing, and they needed to make it more clear that "unobtanium" was a joke (apparently there was a real name for the mineral in the original treatment, but much got cut out, this was a snide joke name for the substance).

When the new bikes used to come out, we'd sometimes look at the parts and call the metal "drillium" if it had lots of holes in it.  Just sayin.

Didn't Oakley use that name for their glasses frames as well?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unobtainium

They coulda picked some other name for the compound in Avatar, but noooo.  :(
