I just learned a couple months ago that the Caesar was invented in Calgary!
And most other countries have no idea what it is.
Neat!
I remember when I was in Hong Kong, having a beer at the hotel bar. I decided to switch gears, and asked them for a Caesar. The conversation (she was a Filipina 'tender) went something like this:
Bartender: "
What was it you wanted?"
Me: "
A Caesar please."
Bartender: "
Sorry, but I have to admit I don't know what kind of drink that is. Is it in this book?"
*hands me a bartender's bible*
Me (after flipping through the vodka section): "
No, I don't see it here."
Bartender: "
Ok, what's in it then? Maybe I could make it for you."
Me: "
Vodka, clamato, worcestershire sauce, tabasco sauce...."
Bartender: "
Wait - what was after vodka?"
Me: "
Clamato. A mixture of clam broth in tomato juice. Do you have it here?"
Bartender (slightly offended): "
Of course. Are those the only ingredients?"
Me: "
Mostly. There's also some celery salt around the rim, and some people stick a stalk of celery or some pickled bean or asparagus or other hard vegetable in it."
Bartender (smiling, as if a light went off in her head): "
Yes, I know that one. It's called a Bloody Mary here."
Me (muttering): "
Urmm... doesn't that just have tomato juice in it...?"
Bartender (doesn't hear me as she's mixing up the drink): "
There you go. Enjoy!"
She served me a uckfaying bloody mary, without clam juice.
